So, I did my first artist bio on Frankie Knuckles so when it came to doing my next I felt I needed to respond with the artist I consider the UK GOAT!!
Carl Andrew Cox was born on 29 July 1962 in Oldham, Greater Manchester, England.
He is of Barbadian heritage and grew up surrounded by music, especially the soul, funk, and disco records played in his family home. From a young age, Carl showed a deep interest in music. By the age of 15 he had bought his first set of turntables and began working as a mobile DJ, playing at weddings, parties, and small local events.
During his teenage years, he immersed himself in various genres such as rare groove, hip-hop, electro, and disco. This eclectic background would later shape the sound he became famous for. His career truly took off during the late 1980s, at the height of the UK’s acid house and rave explosion.
He became one of the standout DJs of that era by playing at iconic early rave events and clubs, performing at the legendary Shoom nightclub opening night for club owner and friend Danny Rampling, this turned out to be a key moment in British dance music history and Carl was soon headlining massive outdoor raves like the 1988 Sunrise event, where he played to around 15,000 people. This allowed Cox to quickly gain a reputation for his innovative three-deck mixing technique, a rare and technically demanding style that helped define his identity as a DJ.
In the early 1990s, there was a transition from rave DJ to recording artist and global club figure.
He released his debut single “I Want You (Forever)” on Paul Oakenfold’s Perfecto label and continued to produce music while touring internationally. He worked hard on developing a stronger focus on techno, moving away from commercial house trends.
During the 90’s Carl released his mix album “F.A.C.T.”, this has now becum a techno benchmark for today’s DJs and he was also voted World No.1 DJ by DJ Magazine in 1997, confirming his global reputation.
Throughout the 1990s, Cox became known for marathon DJ sets, infectious energy, and an ability to connect with large crowds. This was no more notable than in Ibiza where his influence reached its peak. From 2001 to 2016, he held a legendary residency called “Music is Revolution” at Space Ibiza, which ran every summer season. This residency became one of the longest-running and most successful in club history and cemented Cox’s reputation as the “King of Ibiza”, attracting fans from all over the world.
When space finally shut its doors in 2016 it was Carl that played all night and finished his set with the beautiful ‘wish I didn’t miss you anymore’ by Angie stone, What a choice!, just perfect for that moment in time. During this period, he was also headlining major festivals like Ultra and Tomorrowland and started running his own “Carl Cox & Friends” stages at global events.
Like most artists today Carl Cox is not just a DJ—he is also a producer, label owner, and broadcaster. He founded record labels like Intec Records and Awesome Soundwave which focused more on live electronic performers. He broke into radio, hosting the “Global” radio show and was a regular contributor to Radio 1’s Essential Mix, appearing here once is normally a highlight for DJs!!
Away from the decks Carl now shares his time between his homes in Melbourne Australia and the UK. He has a real love of motorsport and is the founder of Carl Cox Motorsport, where he is involved in motorsport competitions and team ownership.
Carl Cox remains active and influential. He continues to perform at major festivals worldwide and curates’ events and residencies. He has a passion for supporting emerging artists through his labels and events. He is widely regarded as one of the most respected DJs in history and the person that was the bridge between the underground rave origins and modern global electronic music. His famous catchphrase “Oh yes, oh yes!” has become synonymous with his infectious enthusiasm and connection to the crowd. When he smiles and you see that gap in his teeth you know you are in for an amazing set.
If Frankie was the GOAT, Carl has to be in that heard with a few others through time, is he England’s greatest it has to be “Oh yes, oh yes”
